DeafCAN! runs ASL / American Sign Language classes of different levels from September through May each year.

DeafCAN! ASL class

We also provide training for health, human service, and other providers on working more effectively with Deaf and hard of hearing people they serve.

General Awareness Workshops, customized to each field, usually cover the following:

  • Diversity of the DHH population by degree of hearing loss, age of onset, family support / dynamics, education, other challenges
  • Communication mode/s of both individual and family, school…
  • Unique challenges & opportunities
  • Effective communication, communication assessments and relation  accommodations:  sign language interpreters (and how to use them), captions, alerting devices for independence/productivity, special phones/aps (VP-Video Phones, Caption phones / speech to text – text to speech, amplified phones…
  • Civil rights disability laws (Rehab Act 1973, ADA 1990, PA Human Relations Commission…)

We provide a limited, mostly local, amount of interpreting services within the region.
